New Releases: May 6, 2022 - Halestorm
HALESTORM ARE BACK FROM THE DEAD Halestorm - Back From The Dead A few years back I wrote about the release of the band's previous album, Vicious. Up until then, I had heard songs by the band here and there that I liked. But their full-length albums were missing something.I often say this, they didn't release anything that was bad by any stretch of the imagination. But in my opinion, they hadn't lived up to all of the hype that had been placed on the band. But I get it, in 2009 when they released their self-titled debut album, it was a big deal for someone like Lzzy Hale to break on through as a hard rock artist. A female frontwoman that could sing and play the way she could. Comparisons to other icons were inevitable and merited. In the underground rock and metal scenes, you still had females fronting bands. Unfortunately, they were nowhere near the radio. Not like 90s alternative bands, or any of the college rock darlings that sprouted up after. How many mainstream radio-friendly rock, or hard rock, bands after the Wilson sisters in Heart, Joan Jett, or a Lita Ford, have received close to the same amount of airplay Halestorm has obtained since Jett and Ford dominated MTV?Lzzy has been the Joan Jett, Lita Ford, Nancy, and Anne Wilson of her generation. Since 2009, is there another female artist that has had as high of a profile as her? Enough for a company like Gibson to sell a signature model guitar with their name on it? Is there anyone else that has inspired as many young girls to pick up a guitar and rock out? How many albums has the band released? This is full-length number five. It is their first album since 2018's Vicious. Who produced the album? Nick Raskulinecz, who is known for working with Rush, Foo Fighters, and many more. He also produced Vicious, the band's previous album. What label is the band on? The band's label is Atlantic Records. How many years has the band been active? They've been together since 1997.And with all due respect, with all of the focus being placed on Lzzy, her brother Arejay, bassist Josh Smith, and guitarist Joe Hottinger deserve plenty of attention as well. This nucleus has been together since way before the first album was released. This is a family in every sense of the word. Their writing and playing has matured over the years and is the reason why the last two albums have been so strong top to bottom.Back From The Dead picks up where Vicious left off. You know with Nick Raskulinecz behind the boards that the album would sound great. You also have to figure that in order for him to put his name on the album, it has to be good album. The songwriting for this album started before Covid. There are plenty of tracks on this album whereas players and writers they take things to the next level. A lot of times when I discuss artists I can't help but point out how they've lost their fire, and how that angst and hunger that hooked me was gone. That's not the case with Back From The Dead. The title track kicks the album off, and it's like a mission statement telling you this is going to be a loud, and angry album. This continues for much of the album. The softer side of the album also seems to be more intricate and worked out than anything they've done in the past. A credit to them just wanting more.If you've never heard the band, or are looking for that album by them to win you over, this is a good place to start and work back through their catalog. If you already love them, Back From The Dead will probably only make you love them more.
